A group promoting and developing a format for a next-generation DVD technology announced on Wednesday the completion of the first version of the specification, paving the way for disk production.

Makers of next-generation disc format outline their plans for final specs and future products.

In the latest move in a heated format fight for the next-generation DVD standard Blu-ray, Japanese electronics maker Sharp said Thursday it would launch a DVD recorder based on Blu-ray technology in December.

Sharp Corp. said will put its first Blu-ray Disc recorder on sale in Japan next month.

New component could allow players small enough to fit in notebook PCs.
